DIGITAL WATCH HEAVEN

WATCH HISTORY AND MY THOUGHTS

Watches have been a part of human history as early as the 1800's, and have been an important and functional fashion accessory since.

In the early 1970's, the first digital wristwatch was invented. It was the Pulsar, a stylish golden watch that featured a red face, which told the hour, minute, and nothing else. The Pulsar would later get scooped up by Seiko, and the rest is history.

Afterwards, the digital watch industry exploded. Companies began making their own digital watches. And then to compete, they started trying to one up eachother with even crazier, unique watches to diverse themselves from the competition.

Video game watches, radio watches, watches with TVs inside of them, watches that could talk, that could sing to you. These were just some of the things companies like Seiko, Casio, Timex and etc. would come up with.

The world of digital watches was rich with diversity. It was a lot like flip-phones; There was a watch for everyone, and anyone, and they were all different. There were expensive ones. There were affordable ones. Each with their own induvidual charm.

Nowadays, everyone I know has the same watch. The same smartwatch, the same shiny black box. And it's not even their fault! They're helpful! They connect to your phone, they track your steps, your heartbeat, they can play music and read you texts. That's more than any of these watches could do.

But they are so

fucking

UGLY!!!!

That's just my opinion. But it's also my truth. I hate smart watches. They are so completely devoid of any charm, any style, any soul. Sure, you can put a new case or strap on it... But same shit, different toilet. The world of digital watches was full of people pushing for progress, people pushing the envelope and trying to make something new and exciting and fun

There's nothing fun to me about having a phone in my hand and a phone on my wrist at all times. I don't want to be tethered to my phone anymore. It's also not reasonable to think everyone should be able to afford a tiny iphone on their wrist.

Digital watches are fun. Sometimes they're classy, Sometimes they're silly, sometimes they're just functional, and sometimes they're meant for hard work and have to be sturdy. Smartwatches are one thing, and you know what that is?

B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!!

Obviously I don't think you're lame if you have a smartwatch. How could I blame you for that? It's functional. But I just think there's something lacking in it. There's no whimsy in that little black box. It's just a text from your boss asking if you can cover someone's shift tommorrow.

So that's my piece on this whole thing. If you read this, thank you. I'm kind of just writing this for me at this point, but it's something I'm passionate about. I hope that some day, technology can find it's magic again.
